Dare to Flare

For all of us that worship at the altar of the ever flattering, ever versatile skinny jean (myself included), what I am about to tell you may come as a bit of a shock. The fashion forecast for 2015 has a markedly retro look, a 70’s inspired revival of sorts. And with that in mind, fashions newest ‘IT’ jean has a distinctly retro feel as well. Witness the rebirth of that Partridge Family favorite: the FLARE!

Ok, deep breath, now that you have overcome the initial shock, let’s talk about styling. When styled incorrectly, flares can have a tendency to look costume-y. Proportion is everything, and the key here is balance. So to keep your look updated, I recommend pairing your flares with some of springs other big fashion trends:

Cropped Tops: Wait! Don’t tune out just yet. You can wear a cropped top with flares without the aid of a personal trainer. This season’s flared denim has a much higher rise, so that ideally, your top should hit just at the waistband of your flares, meaning you don’t need six-pack abs to rock a cropped silhouette. Both fitted and boxier shapes work well, just be sure that your top doesn’t hit too far below the waist to avoid looking sloppy or adding too much volume.

Wedges: Flared jeans look best when styled with high-soled shoes, they just don’t hold the same fashion-girl appeal when paired with flats, and this is where platform shoes or wedges come into play. When pairing your flares with a chunky wedge shoe, make sure that the hem of your flares ends a bit above the soles of your shoes to avoid looks sloppy, or worse, footless! Ideally, your shoes should be peeking out just a smidge from the hem of your flares. An added bonus of this trend is that the combination of higher-waist pants and chunky heels will give the illusion of legs that go on for miles, which is something that this short-legged girl can definitely get on board with!

So go ahead, and give your skinnies a well-deserved break. And if you need some more inspiration before you make the leap into flares, look no further than the supermarket check-out line. Celebs like Victoria Beckham, Eva Longoria, and Katie Holmes are all are seen regularly rocking some flared denim. So dare to flare, you won’t be sorry you did! This is definitely a fashion trend that has legs.

Prolonging Your Youth

Well here we go.....  Probably not going to make many friends here, probably going to lose a few actually.  No one likes to lose friends, but I think what I have to say is worth it.

We have a marketing schedule at the store, and it's always a big joke if we are going to get the blogs done when they are scheduled to be done (currently Lindsey Marie and I share the task).  Well, mine was due today and the girls were joking, "you are never going to get your blog done today!"  They were right, I had nothing in the pipeline. Nothing.  I went home, sat in front of the magical Mac, Googled fashion trends for inspiration, and poured myself a glass of wine.  I repeat, I poured myself a glass of wine.

Yes,Yoli gods, I realize this is not allowed on my protein day, but I needed it tonight for inspiration.

And then, the obvious slapped me in the face.  Here we go.  So you guys realize that we moved, right?  We are in a strip mall close to coffee shops, a grocery store, a salon, and a tanning salon.  What all of us Slipperistas CANNOT believe is how incredibly busy this tanning salon is!  It is a continuous, revolving door.  Plenty of red faced, combination lotion pleasantry, mixed with charred skin smelling gals.

This is where I begin to lose friends.

I have fake baked.  For years.  But sooner or later, something hits you.....like WHAT am I doing?!?!  Maybe it's yet another segment on TV about melanoma and tanning beds, or maybe it's that new mole that makes you wonder "where did that come from."  But it just does hit you.  Personally, I am clean a year now.

And something happened a couple of weeks ago that I think pushed me over the edge.  A mother and daughter came in and asked for a piece of twine to put on the daughter's goggles so that she could tan.  And I did it.  And all along I knew I shouldn't have.  I obviously, am still thinking of it.  Women aged 18 to 39 are now eight times more likely to be diagnosed with Melanoma than they were just 40 years ago!  Several states have even banned the use of tanning beds for minors (I believe that Iowa is pending for 2016). Today, the number of skin cancer cases due to tanning is higher than the number of lung cancer cases due to smoking!

It is prom season, and I know that every high school girl wants a golden tan as the perfect accessory, to that perfect dress.  Please consider the use of tanning lotions or spray tans this season (and forever actually).  There are so many options to at least try out before settling on the suntan coffin.

I say all of this to provoke thought and conversation, not to lose friends.  I am not a hypocrite. I've done it.  But that chapter is finished.  Not to mention, I've fallen in love with spray tans :)

Slipperista’s 10 Commandments

1.       We understand that life is not just about boardrooms and cocktail parties.

2.       We love not being 20 anymore.

3.       We know that dressing smart is sexy.

4.       Comfort is everything.

5.       We know that the perfect accessory makes the outfit.

6.       We appreciate individualism.

7.       We have learned that the back view is just as important as the front.

8.       Some trends are not meant to be followed.

9.       There are never enough shoes!
